How to Use Puppy Training Pads Effectively

The best results come from consistency, not the pad itself. Place the pad in one fixed location — ideally near the door you’ll eventually want your puppy to use to go outside. After every meal, every nap, and every play session, bring your puppy directly to the pad. Most puppies pick up the association within one to three weeks when this routine is consistent.

Key tips that make a real difference:

Use the largest pad you can, especially with medium to large breeds. A puppy’s aim is not precise — a bigger surface area means fewer misses. The 60x90cm XL pads give considerably more margin for error than smaller alternatives.

Don’t clean with ammonia-based products. The scent of ammonia mimics the smell of urine and can draw puppies to the wrong spots. Use an enzyme-based cleaner on hard floors.

Don’t move the pad. Pick one spot and keep it there until the habit is established. Moving it mid-training resets the association.

For older dogs, sick dogs, or dogs with mobility limitations who are being managed indoors, the same pad principles apply — and the  TBM incontinence bed pads used for human care.

For small breeds and puppies under 6kg, TBM’s 60x60cm large pads provide adequate coverage.
